Jamb, stop and casing at a door

A flat jamb lines the opening, the colonial door stop is fixed to it, and the casing covers the joint between jamb and wall. The door opens into the next room, so the jamb and the stop show.

Jamb, stop and casing

How the parts fit together

The jamb lines the opening in the wall. The door stop is fixed to the jamb so the door closes in line, and the casing covers the joint between jamb and wall on both faces.

The jamb width follows the wall: a 4‑9/16″ jamb suits a 2×4 wall with 1/2″ drywall on both sides, a 6‑9/16″ jamb a 2×6 wall. In the UK the jamb is called a door lining; it comes plain, with a planted stop, or rebated.

Common jamb and lining profiles

US jambs are flat boards ordered by width; UK linings come plain or rebated. The drawings show common shapes at typical sizes.

How it’s made

See how a door jamb is made

Pick a jamb and follow it through our line step by step, from clear pine blocks to a primed jamb, then take it apart to see the pine and the primer.

Drag to turn it

The 3D view is not available in this browser. The steps below describe the same process.

  1. Knots and defects are cut out of pine boards, and the clear blocks are glued end to end with finger joints into long blanks.

  2. A moulder shapes the jamb: face, eased edges, the rebate of a UK lining and the relief grooves in the back.

  3. The jamb is sanded smooth, ready for the primer.

  4. A white primer coat goes on the face and edges. The jamb is ready for the final paint.

Illustration. The sections are common profile types drawn at typical sizes, not a catalogue; every profile is shown at about the same width, and the coats are drawn thicker than they are.

Materials

Primed MDF or finger-jointed pine

Both come primed white, ready for the final paint. Tell us which one your market expects, or order both in the same container.

Primed MDF

Smooth and stable, with no grain to show through the paint. MDF jambs get a gesso coat and a white primer on our coating line.

Finger-jointed pine

Clear pine blocks, cut free of knots and finger-jointed into long lengths, then moulded and primed white. Real wood for paint-grade work.

Ordering

Jambs in the same container as the rest of your order

  1. Send the profiles: a drawing, sample or photo for each one, with the material, lengths and quantity.
  2. Approve the sample: we send you a sample, and production starts once you approve it.
  3. Production: the lead time for custom orders is 15–30 days.
  4. Loading: jambs can share a container with casings, door stop, skirting and boards. The minimum order is one 20ft container, and it is negotiable; the quantity of each profile follows your order.

We cut every profile to the lengths on your order. The quotation gives any tooling or sample cost and the packing.
